The New York Public Library holds a wealth of unexpected sources of inspiration for artists and designers—from vintage valentines and textile patterns, to fabric samples and turn-of-the-century menus from around the world. For this online-only miniseries, “Design by the Book,” the Library partnered with the leading design blog Design*Sponge to invite five New York City-based artists to sift through our collections in search of inspiration. Stay tuned for future episodes as the artists, who range from a glassblower to a letterpress printer, create unique works inspired by what they found; special guest Isaac Mizrahi will also join us to share his sources of inspiration. The artists are: Lorena Barrezueta, Rebecca Kutys, Mike Perry, John Pomp and Julia Rothman. Music by Clear Tigers.

The Origin of the Whiteboard Adventures
This was inspired by a photo I took of myself one day at the beach. As with many of my photos I posted it on Facebook where it was seen by my fellow co-worker Orville. It motivated him enough to print it out, cut it, and tape it onto the whiteboard. From there it grew…
Because it was a portrait and didn’t showcase my nubile body, it left to interpretation what I was doing below the neckline. So my co-workers began to draw what they thought I would/should/could be doing. Each week I was doing something new to a point where it was decided this should be documented and shared with the portion of the world that’s on the internet.
More will be added later, and eventually a downloadable template, so others can do the same as we’ve done in our work place.

This is my umpteenth time trying to maintain a blog. I’ve had several blogs each with varying topics, but failed to keep up with them, because of a lack of inspiration and I never know if anyone reads it.
Hopefully this time it’ll take. I won’t make this blog about anything specific. I’ll just post whatevers and whatnots, and godwilling it’ll spark some interest in the ether called the internet.
I was excited about doing this, because it was my first time painting in a looong time. This was done for my buddies Christine and Oliver who have gotten friends who’ve visited paint for them. They provide the paints, brushes, and canvas, and all you got to do is paint, eat their candy, and enjoy the company.
